Although it is felt that the title is not actually a meta tag but rather just a required part of the page's header text, it is still important to use this area as a means of identification. The meta description is used to identify pages and provide a meaningful, quick summary that will be seen in the search results. If no statement is present, Google provides one that may or may not be the best representation of that web page and site. While there are still two viewpoints on whether meta description tags really make a difference, there is still some support for the belief that using this field to its fullest is just one more tiny step in the optimization process and fitting the standards of Google's search algorithm. It is hard to say how this tag will affect each individual website; however, for the little extra effort to create a good representation, at the very least it is unlikely that it could create any harm. For the benefit of attracting more viewers, creating a description meta tag seems to be a worthwhile task!
