Complete the Google Algorithmic Puzzle With Meta and Description Tags

As Google continues to release updates to its algorithms, changing the game of ranking websites a little bit more each time, it is important to continue using the best tactics to keep ranking high. One of the more overlooked methods that helps get recognition from Google is employing meta and description tags which unfortunately are not always used due to a lack of understanding about this benefit. SEO experts have some tips to help explain meta tags and how they can be put to good use.

Tags Importance

Meta tags, typically considered the title and description, are bits of information that help indexers identify a web page and what type of information it contains. Although it is felt that the title is not actually a meta tag but rather just a required part of the page's header text, it is still important to use this area as a means of identification. More importantly, the meta description carries more weight in how Google represents a page in the search results ranking.

Description Benefits

The meta description is used to identify pages and provide a meaningful, quick summary that will be seen in the search results. If no statement is present, Google provides one that may or may not be the best representation of that web page and site. Offering a well thought out, concise summary is the best way to attract the attention of users skimming through search results.

A good meta description within a page's header code provides a way for viewers to know about the website when it is brought up in the search engine results. Instead of having a random statement assigned by Google which is usually the first line of text on a page, viewers will see an accurate website representation and know right away if it is relevant to their search.

There are other, less obvious ways in which a good meta description benefits websites as well. When correctly written to include a keyword, meta statements can help website optimization. More importantly, having a good summary does help increase click through rates as viewers don't have to wonder about relevancy of the response. Additionally, if the description is a well-planned sentence and not just a string of keywords, better recognition by Google's search algorithms as being a quality internet location can be achieved.

Description Tag Creation

It would be valuable to keep in mind when coming up with a useful text for the meta description field the following limitations and suggestions. Tags should be around 150 characters long and no more than 155 characters, which allows for the whole text to fit and be displayed by Google in its search results. Compose a grammatically correct, one-sentence synopsis about the website; avoid quotations, apostrophes, and other punctuation that disrupts how Google reads a sentence. If keywords are included, use them sparingly in ways that fit naturally into a sentence and of course, view the results to confirm how the statement appears. Adjust as necessary until it looks right and will be informative to readers.

While there are still two viewpoints on whether meta description tags really make a difference, there is still some support for the belief that using this field to its fullest is just one more tiny step in the optimization process and fitting the standards of Google's search algorithm. It is hard to say how this tag will affect each individual website; however, for the little extra effort to create a good representation, at the very least it is unlikely that it could create any harm. For the benefit of attracting more viewers, creating a description meta tag seems to be a worthwhile task!
